Neill Blomkamp Already Eyeing District 9 Sequel?

In not so breaking news, “District 9” is one of the smash hits of the summer. The sci-fi phenomenon is adored by critics and the public alike (see our review here) and given its success, everyone has been asking director Neill Blomkamp and producer Peter Jackson if we will be seeing more from the “District 9” universe.

Blomkamp told EW, “I would do anything to go back to the world of ‘District 9’ again, or ‘District 10,’ ” and then MTV, “When I started thinking about it, I thought I’d totally like to go back to the creative universe of ‘District 9’ for sure. Hopefully there’s a place for that sometime in the future.” It sounds like Blomkamp is caught up in “District 9”-mania and understandably so.

Jackson however is not as gung-ho on his involvement in a sequel. “If I’ve done my job properly, Neill won’t need me anymore.” In a separate interview Jackson said, “I believe movies should come from the heart, and if there’s any sequel or continuation of ‘District 9,’ it should only be because there’s a good idea involved, not because it’s a money-making venture.” PJ isn’t in it for the paycheck. Here here, Mr. Jackson.

But wait, in an interview with Fangoria Blomkamp hinted that ‘District 10’ might not be the next on his list. “I’ve actually got an idea now for the next film I want to do, which is [another] science fiction movie.” So if ‘District 10’ does happen it could be pushed back until after this next project when much of the current buzz will, no doubt, have died down. Right now, it seems like all the sequel talk is being initiated by the press and doesn’t have any legs just yet. But who knows, ‘District 16’ coming in 2020 is a possibility given the lack of original ideas in the studios these days. Let’s at least pray that originality — like “District 9” itself — wins out in the end. [MTV]
