NEON is one of the great modern film distribution companies. They brought Bong Joon-ho‘s stellar Best Picture winner “Parasite” to domestic theaters, Kristen Stewart‘s acclaimed Princess Diana drama “Spencer,” and will be releasing David Cronenberg‘s body horror film “Crimes of The Future” in early June, and Brandan Cronenberg‘s (“Possessor“) upcoming sci-fi thriller “Infinity Pool“ starring Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård (“The Northman“).
They’ve just acquired another interesting project with two high-profile Best Actress Oscar winners attached. Deadline has revealed that NEON has nabbed the U.S. rights to “Mothers’ Instinct” which is a remake of the Belgian film “Duelles.” Oscar-winning actresses Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye“) and Anne Hathaway (“Les Miserables“) are set to star.
Director Olivier Masset-Depasse, who made the original that was released in 2018, returns to make this new English-language incarnation and directs from a script from Sarah Conradt.
“Mothers’ Instrict” is based on the Barbara Abdel novel, “Derrière la Haine.”
Here is the film’s synopsis that Deadline has supplied:
Set in the early ‘60s, it follows best friends and neighbors Alice (Chastain) and Celine (Hathaway), who live an idyllic traditional lifestyle with manicured lawns, successful husbands, and sons of the same age. Life’s perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion, and paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond, and a psychological battle of wills begins as the maternal instinct reveals its darker side.
Filming on “Mothers’ Instinct” will begin on May 25 and we’ll be waiting for a concrete release date announcement from NEON.
