If anyone was thinking Netflix and Amazon were going to take the pedal off the medal this Emmy season you were gravely mistaken. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” may currently look like insurmountable frontrunners in the Drama and Comedy Series categories, but the streaming giants aren’t acting like it. Over the span of the last 24 hours, both companies revealed their plans to once again give Emmy voters “experiences” that no other network has come close to attempting.
Amazon Prime Video is once again taking over the Hollywood Athletic Club in, obviously, Hollywood where it will showcase contenders such as “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” “Homecoming,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Romanoffs,” “Good Omens,” “Catastrophe” and “Fleabag.” This usually means Instagram friendly displays as well as props and exhibits depending on the program. A majority of those shows will have official Television Academy screenings and Q&As onsite as well as “A Very English Scandal,” “The Man in High Castle” and “Lorena.” Additionally, Amazon will host events such as a “Boss Brunch” panel on the subject of women shattering that glass ceiling in Hollywood and a discussion on stunt work “Jack Ryan’s” stunt coordinator, Jean Frenette. Space will be up and running from April 17-May 5.
Netflix, on the other hand, is bringing the star power to court Emmy voters. Their third annual pop-up FYSEE experience will kick off with an event featuring Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen on Sunday, May 5. It will close out on June 9 with a Q&A featuring Ava DuVernay and the cast of the limited event series “When They See Us” hosted by Oprah Winfrey. The streaming giant is planning special themed events with potential Primetime Emmy contenders Ellen DeGeneres, Quincy Jones and David Letterman among many others. A full schedule of events will highlight individual series such as “Bodyguard,” “House of Cards,” “Ozark,” “The Umbrella Academy,” “Russian Doll,” “The Kominsky Method,” “GLOW,” “Dead to Me,” “BoJack Horseman,” “Disenchantment,” “Big Mouth” as well as documentary series “Our Planet,” “Making a Murderer Part 2,” and “Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes.” Reality contenders such as “Queer Eye,” “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj,” “Salt Fat Acid Heat,” Chef’s Table” and “Nailed It!” will also be showcased.
Netflix has taken over 32,000-square-foot of soundstages at Raleigh Studios and will once again house a state-of-the-art 400-seat theater for FYC screenings and curated panels as well as a reception space with exhibits and activations (i.e., Instagram photo opps).
New specialty programming for guild members and industry attendees includes a “GLOW Binge-a-thon,” an all-day binge-watching experience with the show’s cast members and a “Prom Night,” where visitors can meet with casts and creators from titles including “Sex Education,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” “On My Block” and others.
Both studios hope their events help sway Television Academy members who begin voting for the Emmy nominations on June 10.
