It hasn’t long for Netflix to react to the allegations of sexual misconduct and assault that have levelled at Kevin Spacey. While it was reportedly in the works since the summer, the streaming service announced yesterday that the sixth season of hit “House Of Cards” will be its last. Now, news is emerging that the brand might find new life, but without Spacey’s involvement.
Much like HBO is doing with “Game Of Thrones,” Netflix is developing a handful of spinoffs for “House Of Cards.” At the top of the list is a potential series revolving around Frank Underwood’s ruthless aide Doug Stamper, played by Michael Kelly, with Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump,” “The Insider,” “Munich“) penning the script. Other ideas being tossed around include a series about journalists and bloggers in Washington, or a series following the Wall Street power players who flex their influence on politicians. Certainly, there are more than few ways to approach the seamy world of U.S. politics on the small screen.Personally, I’d love to see a series focused on Mahershala Ali‘s Remy Danton. One thing you can count out, however, is a “House Of Cards” movie.
“With ‘House of Cards,’ even if a writer had a great take, it would be done as a two-hour, two-part episode rather than a movie,” a source at Netflix said. “There’s just no interest there the way there is at HBO.”
There’s no timeline for when the spinoff might air, and I’d presume like HBO, Netflix is going to take their time before deciding how they’ll pass the “House Of Cards” torch on to a new group of storytellers. [Variety/THR]
