Ok, So Maybe There’s Only 15 Or So…
After witnessing a mysterious train crash, a group of friends in the summer of 1979 begin noticing strange happenings going around in their small town, and begin to investigate into the creepy phenomenon. This is the premise of J.J. Abrams‘ upcoming new suspense thriller/monster-movie-to-be/obsession-with-being-the-child-of Steven Spielberg pic, titled “Super 8” (ok, so it’s a homage to youth and Super 8 home movies as well).
And boy, you saw “Star Trek” so you know Abrams’ looooves lens flares which are on serious display here in pretty much every frame. Starring Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich plus relative newcomer kids Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths and Ryan Lee, with, it would appear, a special guest appearance by Professor Lens Flare; a new :30 second clip will have you believe that Abrams’ favorite trick of the light is also a character in the film.
Due June 10, the new spot features the Cars‘ “Bye Bye Love,” and looks well, rather thrilling in the best popcorn, escapist, Spielberg-ian way (obviously a mish-mash of all the Amblin years), but dude, maybe cool it on the lens flares just slightly? We’ve only just got through watching Kenneth Branagh try to marry the dutch angle across two hours of “Thor.” Even so, still looks like the best mainstream movie of the summer. Watch the clip below, plus another new-ish TV spot that have been making the rounds of late.
