While basically all trailers for the upcoming “Godzilla vs. Kong” have focused on the titular showdown between Godzilla and King Kong, Kong using one of Godzilla’s dorsal fins as an axe, and a ton of buildings being destroyed, the latest trailer also teased the appearance of a very special and robotic guest, reinforcing the idea that Mechagodzilla will make its debut in the new MonsterVerse film.

With this epic clash of titans just around the corner, early reactions for “Godzilla vs. Kong” are already out, and they are about what you would expect from this movie. SlashFilm‘s Ben Pearson praise the big monster action, saying it “should satisfy the people who are interested in a movie like this.” Likewise, Perri Nemiroff from Collider tweeted that “the titan fights are the best parts of [the movie]” and praised director Adam Wingard‘s “eye to make the most of those moments!”

Writing for io9, Germain Lussier expressed admiration for the “crazy ambitious” story that “achieves some unique sci-fi coolness,” but also finds issues with the human side of the story and describes it as “overstuffed, illogical and pointless.”

Our own Rodrigo Perez tweeted that the film was decent but pointed that there was “lots of effort put into the mythology,” but doesn’t necessarily succeed with its narrative regardless and seems more underwhelmed than most critics.
If it seems like this is just a repeat of the previous movies in the MonsterVerse, you’re not wrong. Pretty much every one of these movies has been praised for its handling of the big kaiju fights while drawing criticism for boring, distracting, and pointless human characters that take way too much screentime without much meaning. The only Godzilla movie in recent years to actually have a meaningful human plot is Hideaki Anno‘s “Shin Godzilla,” which essentially imagined what if the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami had instead been a Godzilla attack, and how the government would have reacted to it.
Will “Godzilla vs. Kong” fare any better than its predecessors when it comes to human characters and actual plot? We’ll find out when the film gets released on March 31. Trailer and tweets below.
