While Eli Roth's next directorial effort still seems to be a long way off, the man certainly isn't resting on his laurels, and in 2012 he's busier than ever. Later this year his co-written and co-produced martial arts flick, the RZA directed "The Man With The Iron Fists" will kick and punch its way into theaters, and on the festival circuit he's got something a little different on the way as well.
Co-written by Latin-American filmmakers Nicolás López (who also directs), Guillermo Amoedo and Roth, and starring and presented by Roth as well, the disaster thriller "Aftershock" is centered around the February 27, 2010 Chilean earthquake, with the fictional story about an insane asylum whose inmates are freed during the earthquake. And oh yeah, Selena Gomez is in this too. Here's the official synopsis: In Chile, an American tourist’s vacation goes from good to great when he meets some beautiful women travellers. But when an earthquake ravages the underground nightclub they’re in, a fun night quickly turns to terror. Escaping to the surface is just the beginning as they face nightmarish chaos above ground.
Appropriately, the movie will make its world premiere in the Midnight Madness lineup at TIFF. No U.S. distributor yet, but if it can make audiences scream, it won't be too long before it's snapped up. You can check out more pics from the film right here.
Meanwhile, remember "Warm Bodies"? Jonathan Levine's ("50/50") zombie romance was originally slated to hit theaters next week, but was moved to an early 2013 release date and not much has been heard since. It's a bit curious that it had zero presence at Comic-Con, who you would think would be the perfect audience for the film. And it hasn't been announced for the TIFF Midnight Madness lineup either, which also seemed like a no-brainer, no pun intended. Maybe Fantastic Fest? Either way, Summit/Lionsgate will need to start marketing this thing soon as it comes out in about five months.
Until then, a couple of admittedly low-res images have hit of Nicholas Hoult in the brain-eating lead role. Based on a book by Isaac Maron of the same name, the story follows a male zombie (Hoult) who starts a dangerous relationship with one of his victim’s girlfriends, played by Teresa Palmer. Interesting concept, but the lack of buzz is definitely a worry. "Warm Bodies" opens on February 1st. [Kinopoisk]
