With its release just around the corner, “Sin Nombre” director Cary Fukunaga‘s adaptation of Charlotte Brontë‘s classic novel “Jane Eyre” has now unveiled a host of new images featuring a first look at the majority of the supporting cast members.
Led by Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender who’ll play the titular character and her love interest Mr. Rochester respectively, the project also co-stars Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins, Imogen Poots, Holliday Grainger and Tamzin Merchant for the story of a young governess in 19th century England who falls for her employer, and this adaption of the novel will reportedly play up the novel’s darker, gothic sensibilities that have rarely been explored on the screen.
Of the major supporting cast members, Bell will play St. John Rivers, Eyre’s clergyman cousin; Dench will play Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper of Thornfield Manor who disapproves of Eyre’s engagement with Rochester; Hawkins will portray Eyre’s aunt Mrs. Reed who adopts her but abuses and neglects her; while Poots and Grainger will play Diana and Mary Rivers, sisters to St. John. Based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, the romantic drama stars Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) in the lead roles. In the story, Jane Eyre flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester. The isolated and imposing residence – and Mr. Rochester’s coldness – have sorely tested the young woman’s resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned. As Jane reflects upon her past and recovers her natural curiosity, she will return to Mr. Rochester – and the terrible secret that he is hiding…
The script was written, somewhat worryingly, by “Tamara Drewe” scribe Moira Boiffini, but will see Fukunaga reunite with his ‘Nombre” cinematographer Adriano Goldman with Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits of Ruby Films producing in conjunction with BBC Films and Focus Features. Shooting on “Jane Eyre” took place early last year with the film set to finally hits theaters on March 11th. [Focus via ONTD]
