Maybe we should call it Annette Bening day. The actress features in two new photos from two films arriving on the film festival circuit. First up is "Imogene," which is a starring vehicle for Kristen Wiig, developed by the 'SNL' comedienne before she took off in "Bridesmaids." Directed by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman ("American Splendor"), the picture centers on a washed-up playwright (Wiig) who, after faking her own suicide as a ploy to get her ex-boyfriend's attention, winds up remanded to the custody of her wackily dysfunctional family. The picture also co-stars Bening, as you can see by the photo, Matt Dillon and "Glee" star Darren Criss.
Written by Wiig's longtime pal Michelle Morgan, "Imogene" has its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 7th.
The second image of this crop also features Annette Bening, and is from "Ginger & Rosa," a picture that was just announced this morning as part of the Telluride Film Festival line-up. While it's not the most well-known movie of the bunch, reasons to pay attention to this one are myriad. For one, it's directed by Sally Potter, who came to fame in 1992 with "Orlando" and it's her first picture since 2009's "Rage." The picture stars the always-engaging Elle Fanning and Alice Englert, and its supporting cast — featuring Bening, Alessandro Nivola, Christina Hendricks, Timothy Spall, Oliver Platt, and Jodhi May — is pretty damn good too.
"Ginger & Rosa" sounds like an interesting mix of tones, as the picture centers on the lifelong friendship of two teenage girls (Fanning, Englert) that is shattered by ideological differences and personal betrayals, and its setting is evidently the start of the burgeoning sexual revolution in 1960s London. It screens in Telluride this weekend and will also be at the Toronto Film Festival next week.
While it's only slightly different from the shots you've seen thus far, we do have one new-ish photo of Dennis Quaid in Ramin Bahrani's "At Any Price." Honestly, this writer doesn't know what to make of this film. It's directed by Bahrani, the indie auteur behind the critically acclaimed "Man Push Cart" and "Goodbye Solo" and it stars the most random cast ever of Zac Efron, Dennis Quaid and Heather Graham. But if our just-released review from Venice is to be believed, this drama about a rebellious son whose dreams of becoming a professional race car driver are derailed when his father's farming empire becomes the target of a high-stakes investigation, it's one worth watching. It screens in Telluride this weekend and TIFF next week.
And last but not least, here are a bunch of random photos from fall film festival movies we haven't seen yet. A brand new photo of Penélope Cruz and Emile Hirsch in the TIFF-debuting drama "Twice Born"; one new set photo from Michel Gondry's "The We And The I" (also playing TIFF); a new shot from Olivier Assayas' "Something In The Air" (playing in Venice and NYFF); and Hong Sang-soo's "In Another Country" starring Isabelle Huppert, which debuted at Cannes earlier this year and plays again at TIFF next week.
