Several posters are hitting the web this week, offering up some new or expanded artwork for several much-anticipated films.
First up is “The Ice Storm” helmer Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” which doesn’t diverge much from what we’ve already seen in past images, but proves that 20th Century Fox is certainly capitalizing on the film’s attractive aesthetics to market the film. Starring newcomer Suraj Sharma (pictured here with his BFF Bengal tiger), “Pi” follows the story of the titular Indian boy, the son of a zookeeper, who finds himself in the company of several animals, including that tiger, after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean. It’s based on the Yann Martel novel you’ve probably already read, and is set to hit theaters on November 21. [HeyUGuys]
Next is an Australian poster for “Fish Tank” filmmaker Andrea Arnold’s latest, an adaptation of Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights.” We saw Arnold’s adaptation almost a year ago, finding it to be superb and groundbreaking, but the film is still finishing up an international theatrical run, with the U.S. release finally coming on October 5th. What’s worth noting here is the use of actress Kaya Scodelario as the main selling point of the film, which follows a mysterious poor boy who is rescued from poverty and taken in by a wealthy family – and soon develops an intense relationship with a local girl. The poster looks fit for a Criterion cover, and certainly falls in line with some of the other great imagery for Arnold’s film. [Criterion Cast]
Finally, while promotion for “The Proposition” director John Hillcoat’s latest “Lawless” seems content to focus on the films' stars like Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, and Guy Pearce – a new French poster is showing us all how it’s done. Making the film look like the hard-boiled gangster picture that it is, it’s nice to see that at least France will know that this is a crime picture focused on guns, greed, and brotherly love.
