With summer just around the corner, a cadre of posters have been revealed for a few upcoming blockbusters. Expect to see variations of these marketing materials slapped on every conceivable surface between now and their release.
Let’s start with a look at the Wolf Pack in the final, or as the image says, the “epic finale,” poster for “The Hangover Part III.” The last trailer just came out a day or so ago, and the poster doesn’t do anything other than show the three main characters, two of which have weapons I’m sure we’ll see utilized within the movie. Really, this poster hopes you’ve liked the actors’ chemistry with each other in the past, or that you like them as individuals; although I’m sure at this point they’re hoping everyone who saw the first two will be indebted to go see the third.
The final (so they say), installment sees Alan (Zach Galifianakis) mourning the death of his father and the others coming to his emotional aide with the idea of a road trip to lift his spirits. As the new trailer details, a mob boss (John Goodman) wants Alan’s friend/drug fiend Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong) brought to him after Chow committed a robbery. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Justin Bartha (continuing to not participate in the actual adventure) return. “The Hangover Part III” hits theaters May 24th.
A new Japanese poster has been unveiled for “The Wolverine,” the continuation in the adventures of “X-Men” character Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). “The Wolverine” has been furiously hitting its promotional stride with the debut of the official trailer and other images; this new poster doesn’t appear to be any different from the last poster that was released. Both have similar color schemes and showcase a toned Jackman. Here, we’re meant to see some duality within the character and understand that he won’t simply be fighting with his adamantium claws, but also wielding a samurai sword.
“The Wolverine” follows Logan/Wolverine as he travels to modern-day Japan. He confronts adversaries both new and old, whilst finding out things about himself. Directed by James Mangold (“3:10 to Yuma“) and starring Famke Janssen, Tao Okamoto, and Svetlana Khodchenkova, “The Wolverine” hits theaters July 26th. [Recentmovieposters.com]
Character banners to promote “Star Trek Into Darkness” and “The Great Gatsby” have been revealed, and they are pretty spiffy! The ‘Star Trek’ one depicts the four major characters of this movie, including new baddie Benedict Cumberbatch. Really, it seems these are all individual posters strung together but the sense of action is felt despite it immediately reminding me of the “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” poster.
Coming out May 17th, “Star Trek Into Darkness” tells the continued adventures in the Starship Enterprise, led by James T. Kirk (Chris Pine). In this go-round, Kirk and company meet the mysterious John Harrison (Cumberbatch), who might present more of a challenge than already expected.
“The Great Gatsby” banners continue to show off director Baz Lurhmann’s over-the-top, glitzy aesthetic that’s making audiences nervous, particularly after comments from the director that he made a significant change to the book. Regardless, these banners are bright, beautiful, and set the tone for the movie.
The adaptation of the book almost every high schooler has been forced to read follows Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he strives to win the heart of rich-girl Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan).
Both movie are primed to be the biggest movies of the summer. Summer kicks off May 10th with “The Great Gatsby,” and “Star Trek Into Darkness” coming out one week later on May 17th. [Recentmovieposters.com]
Disney hopes to revitalize the western despite the failures of “John Carter” (although apparently Mars sunk that one) and Universal’s “Cowboys & Aliens.” With that, the adaptation of “The Lone Ranger” continues to invade quietly with various posters and trailers that aren’t as bombastic as expected for a movie coming out during the coveted 4th of July weekend. A few more character posters have been discovered on top of the TV spot that came out a few days ago. These posters show off the makeup and gritty realism of villain Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) and Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson). The attention to detail and the way these looks like old-time, ripped paper is nice, although I have to wonder if the use of Instagram filters have lessened the impact.
Starring Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp as legendary heroes John Reid/The Lone Ranger and his partner Tonto, respectively, the origin story details how Reid became the titled hero. It’s based off the 1949 series starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels.
