Hollywood has been spending years trying to mount a remake of the cult favorite “Highlander.” Justin Lin and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo occupied the director’s chair at various points, Ryan Reynolds and Tom Cruise were rumored for roles, but nothing every really coalesced. But at the end of the day, you can’t beat the real thing, and fans are going to have a chance at seeing the 1986 classic once again, and looking better than ever.
“Highlander” has been given a new, 4K restoration and is headed to U.K. cinemas. Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery star in the movie as ancient warriors who head to New York City to participate in the battle to end all battles. And as the immortal line states, when the dust settles, “there can only be one.” Here’s the official synopsis:
1985 New York City; the Battle to end all battles. The last remaining Immortals gather together to fight to the death: decapitation alone can kill them, and the victor alone can lay claim to The Prize. Amongst the contestants is Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), who fought his first battle in 1536 on the highlands of Scotland, swordsman Ramirez (Sean Connery) who mentored MacLeod and taught him the ways of the immortals, and the evil and brutal barbarian Victor Kruger (Clancy Brown).
“Highlander” opens across the pond on June 18th, and hits DVD and Blu-ray on July 11th abroad with new bonus materials. And while there are already a good handful of DVD releases for “Highlander,” no word yet if this new restoration will make its way stateside.
