Director Derek Cianfrance certainly knows his way to an emotional gutpunch, as evidenced by “Blue Valentine,” which beautifully and agonizingly detailed the well of feelings involved in a breakup, leaving us clutching a box of Kleenex by the film’s gorgeous final credits. Can he do the same with “The Light Between Oceans“? Certainly, the story is filled with no shortage of drama that’s primed to not just tug at the heartstrings, but possibly rip them out.

Based on the book by M.L. Stedman, and starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz, the movie follows a couple who take in a seemingly abandoned infant and form a loving family, until the child’s mother comes knocking. Heartbreak to follow. And while it all looks very good, the Labor Day weekend release date, and Disney‘s seeming lack of enthusiasm about the movie, are worrying, but fingers crossed.
“The Light Between Oceans” opens on September 2nd.
