It’s no secret that actor Nicolas Cage loves superheroes. The actor even goes by the name Cage due to his love of Marvel hero Luke Cage. Cage has been linked to superhero franchises throughout the years, coming close to being Superman in Tim Burton’s aborted film and finally getting to wear a superhero costume in both the Matthew Vaughn film “Kick-Ass” and the incredibly awful “Ghost Rider.” But in 2018, it appears that Cage is finally getting another chance at the Marvel universe.
Collider is reporting that the actor has signed on to appear in the upcoming animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” The film is the big-screen introduction of Miles Morales, a young teen who becomes the Spider-Man of another universe. Then through comic book-y machinations, he joins forces with a variety of Spider-Folks, from multiple universes, to tackle the big bad villain.

Cage is set to play the character known as Spider-Man Noir. For those that aren’t big-time nerds like me, Spider-Man Noir is a version of Spidey that comes from a universe that is built around the genre of noir films. Spider-Man Noir has appeared in comics that take place in the 1930’s, where a young Peter Parker is bitten by a toxic spider and is given superhuman abilities. He dons an all-black suit, including a black coat and attempts to rid the underworld of criminals. It’s a much darker take on the character, leaning more into the Batman side of superhero-ing, which is perfect for Cage, who has the gruff voice that would work well.
‘Spider-Verse’ marks the actor’s second big-screen superhero voice job in 2018. He’s also set to finally realize his dream of playing Superman in the upcoming “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies.” In addition to that, if you want your Nic Cage without the superhero trappings, the actor will appear in the upcoming “Mandy,” which looks completely bonkers and amazing.
