Amazon isn’t exactly a superhero factory on the level of Disney+, but they do have a few similar, extremely popular adult-focused shows. “The Boys” heads into its third season on June 3, and we’re still waiting for a drop date for the second season of the animated series “Invincible,” based on Robert Kirkman‘s (“The Walking Dead“) hyper-violent comic book published by Image Comics. Now, the streaming service aims toward a younger audience by giving a female fantasy superhero her own live-action show with the “He-Man & The Masters of The Universe” spinoff character “She-Ra.”
Variety reports that Amazon has hired director Nicole Kassell (“The Woodsman“) to tackle the show’s pilot, with a writer/showrunner yet to be announced. Kassell’s impressive television credits include the critically-acclaimed HBO series “Watchmen,” “Westworld,” “The Leftovers,” “The Americans,” and “Castle Rock.”
She-Ra first debuted onscreen in the 1985 animated film ”He-Man & She-Ra: The Secret of The Sword” before getting her own cartoon series, “She-Ra: Princess of Power.”
Amazon Studios has been behind a bunch of high-profile fantasy series already, with “The Wheel of Time” led by Rosamund Pike (“Gone Girl“) and the upcoming super-expensive Middle-Earth prequel series “The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power” that debuts on September 2. However, given the age of the “She-Ra” cartoon audience, there’s an expectation it could be less mature than other similar projects at Prime Video.
Speaking of “He-Man,” the directors of “The Lost City” are behind a live-action film at Netflix that has Kyle Allen (“West Side Story“) set to play Prince Adam, replacing Noah Centineo (‘Black Adam“).
Given how the show is still in its early stages we’ll have to wait a bit longer before learning who will be cast as “She-Ra.”
