Nicole Kidman Says The Writers Hold The Power Over Whether Or Not There's A 'Big Little Lies' Season 3

After the awards received by “Big Little Lies” Season 1, HBO handed out big paychecks to all the actors and folks involved behind the scenes to make sure Season 2 was able to happen. Now, after the massive ratings and acclaim of Season 2, and its apparent ending, all eyes are on HBO to see if the network is going to figure out a way for Season 3 to come to fruition. However, if series star Nicole Kidman is to be belived, the choice to do more episodes really comes down to the creative minds of Liane Moriarty and David E. Kelley.

According to a new interview with Deadline, Kidman isn’t sure if a Season 3 of “Big Little Lies” will ever come together. But before they can get involved with negotiations with HBO, apparently writer Moriarty and creator-showrunner Kelley have to come up with an idea.

“The muse is Liane, and she will construct something, so it’s left there,” said Kidman. “And I like how that is, that it’s David and Liane. It’s David’s show. David E. Kelley constructed this show with Liane Moriarty. They built it from the ground up, and it’s their show, and we’ll see if they’re ignited into building a life for these women, and which way they would go next. We’ll find out.”

She added, “So, where they would take it, I have no idea. You have to bow down to the writers because that really is where it starts. Unless you’re a director/writer, and then you write it. But this show, we’ll see what Liane can muster, and if she has an interest in it.”

Obviously, this isn’t enough certainty for fans of “Big Little Lies” hoping to see what happens to the various women in the story. That being said, Season 2 seemed to be a longshot, but Moriarty wrote a short novella that would then serve as the basis for the new batch of episodes. So perhaps the writer has another story up her sleeve?

And once that’s decided, then the big money negotiations have to happen with HBO. However, according to recent reports from the network executives, it doesn’t appear that they’re really interested in forking over massive salaries to all the stars at this moment. But then again, that very easily could all change. Then there’s still the stigma that surrounds the show after the alleged controversial treatment of Season 2 director Andrea Arnold. It’s fair to say that even if Moriarty and Kelley come up with a great idea, Season 3 is definitely still up in the air.
