Sadly, the latest project from filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos isn’t quite a feature film. In fact, if this was a Marvel film, the new short “Nimic” is short enough to put before the Marvel Studios logo even appears.
However, any new project from Lanthimos is worth getting excited about, even if it is just a short film. And in honor of the film premiering at Locarno today, we have our first look at the film, with a short teaser, an image, and a poster. So, happy Friday!
“I was glad to be given the opportunity to work on a shorter format that can be sometimes challenging but quite rewarding,” Lanthimos said (via IndieWire). “We developed a script starting from a very intriguing initial idea and concept, and enjoyed great creative freedom during the realization of the film. It is always very exciting to be invited to think outside the box and wrestle with stimulating ideas.”
The relatively brief, 12-minute short is being described as “a small but effective thriller in an aseptic and simple setting with, as usual, an intriguing formal structure.” And if you’ve ever seen anything directed by Lanthimos, you know that no single sentence can encapsulate all that the filmmaker does in his work. So, basically, we just should expect a 12-minute Yorgos Lanthimos thriller, and ultimately, be surprised with what is actually presented.
The cast includes Matt Dillon, Daphné Patakia, Susan Elle, Sara Lee, Eugena Lee, Rowan Kay, Anvo Kyle, Lizzy Ceniceros, Florencia Mariotti, and Jeffrey Raines.
“Nimic” is expected to premiere at the Locarno Film Festival today. No plans for a release outside of the fest has been announced.
Here’s the synopsis:
A professional cellist has an encounter with a stranger on the subway which has unexpected and far-reaching ramifications on his life. Returning to the short film with Nimic, Yorgos Lanthimos proposes a refined and lighter version of his disturbing fantasy, preferring to outline the character or more broadly the personality rather than dystopia.
