Filmmaker Justin Kurzel hit a little bit of a speed bump in his rise as a filmmaker when his first major blockbuster, “Assassin’s Creed,” failed to live up to expectations. However, the filmmaker rebounded quite well a couple of years later with “True History of the Kelly Gang,” which showed Kurzel’s true style and talent once again. Now, he aims to keep the quality coming with the new feature, “Nitram.”
With the premiere of “Nitram” coming next week at the Cannes Film Festival, we are given our first look at the new film from Justin Kurzel with the debut of the first trailer. And in the trailer, which is more of a teaser than anything else, we’re given a story about the title character from his mother, about how a young Nitram took joy in the pain of someone else. This, of course, sets up a film where we’re not quite sure what the disillusioned loner might be capable of doing.
The cast includes Caleb Landry-Jones, Judy Davis, Sean Keenan, Essie Davis, and Anthony Lapaglia. As mentioned, “Nitram” comes from director Justin Kurzel with the script written by Shaun Grant. The duo previously teamed for features such as “The Snowtown Murders” and “The True History of the Kelly Gang.”

“Nitram” is debuting at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. A full release has yet to be announced. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Nitram (Caleb Landry-Jones) lives with his mother (Judy Davis) and father (Anthony LaPaglia) in suburban Australia in the Mid 1990s. He lives a life of isolation and frustration at never being able to fit in. That is until he unexpectedly finds a close friend in a reclusive heiress, Helen (Essie Davis). However when that friendship meets its tragic end, and Nitram’s loneliness and anger grow, he begins a slow descent into a nightmare that culminates in the most nihilistic and heinous of acts.
