The new season of “True Detective” is right around the corner, just over a month away. This time series creator/showrunner Nic Pizzolatto doesn’t have a Cary Funkanaga-like auteur to helm the entire series, but that’s pretty rare in television anyhow (unless you’re Steven Soderbergh and think it’s no big thing). It seems like the dark philosophical tone of season one won’t be repeated either, which is probably a wise choice because you shouldn’t try and recreate an individual as unique and awesome as Rust Cohle. Here’s the official synopsis:
A bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California. Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life’s work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own. Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol who discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars.

Starring Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch, the the first two of this season’s eight episodes will be directed by Justin Lin, but it hasn’t been revealed who will helm the rest yet (don’t be surprised if it’s names like TV journeymen directors like James Foley, Carl Franklin, Agnieszka Holland, all three of whom have killed on shows like "House Of Cards" and "Homeland"). “True Detective" season 2 debuts June 21 at 9PM on HBO. The new trailer below can also been seen on HBO on Sunday, presumably before “Game Of Thrones.” Check out some new photos too.
