Still riding the wave of success from “Avengers Infinity War,” “Solo,” and “Incredibles 2,” Disney is hoping to build momentum for their newest live-action fantasy “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.” Doing what Disney does [or use to do] best, telling fairytales, the studio seems to be putting their own spin on the classic story of “The Nutcracker,” bringing what appears to be a slight “Alice in Wonderland” spin on the tale.
“The Nutcracker And The Four Reals” teaser revealed that the film will star Mackenzie Foy, Kira Knightly, Morgan Freeman, and Dame Helen Mirren. While many love the story of “The Nutcracker,” the story itself doesn’t have the same pull as a live-action remake of a Disney classic. That being said, will these bigger names in the cast be enough to bring people into the theatre? As Disney hasn’t had a big live-action hit since “Into the Woods” in 2014.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.
Also starring in the film are Eugenio Derbez, Miranda Hart, Jack Whitehall, Misty Copelan, with Lasse Hallström directing. The film is set to be released in the U.S. on November 2, 2018.
