Yep, festival season is a little weird this year, but if the currently-ongoing Venice Film Festival and just-started Toronto International Film Festival are any indication, the 58th New York Film Festival is going to be just as good, albeit enjoyed from a safe distance. The festival has a terrific line-up that includes movies from Steve McQueen (three films from his “Small Axe” anthology, Chloe Zhao‘s “Nomadland” starring Frances McDormand, “David Byrne’s American Utopia” from director Spike Lee, “The Human Voice” from Pedro Almodóvar, Orson Welles’ doc “Hopper/Welles,” “On the Rocks” from Sofia Coppola,” and so much more. Being at a festival in person is going to be tricky this year, but that doesn’t mean the line-ups are any less spectacular. And that doesn’t mean that the festivals aren’t providing solutions, because NYFF at least, definitely is.
Today, the 58th New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center, announced the addition of a new festival venue—the Bronx Drive-In at the Bronx Zoo, which joins the previously announced Queens Drive-In at The New York Hall of Science and Brooklyn Drive-In at The Brooklyn Army Terminal. The following screenings will be presented at the Bronx Drive-In: Steve McQueen’s “Lovers Rock” (September 23 at 8pm), John Waters Presents: Art Movie Hell at the Drive-In (September 27 at 8pm), and “American Utopia” (October 7 at 8pm).
