Sony Hoping To Have 'Men In Black 3' For 2011

Does the world really needs a third “Men In Black,” film — A script and story that allegedly raped and pillaged many of the elements from Claire Noto’s famously unmade existentialist sci-fi script, “The Tourist,” and cornball-ized them for summer popcorn fare? (a script apparently so good that it was called the heir apparent to “Bladerunner,” but all attempts to make it failed).

The film is evidently being tracked for a 2011 release. Presumably, since reboot seem to be the flavor of the week, the third “Ghostsbusters,” Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones wouldn’t necessarily need to be on board for the story to keep going as the continuing adventures of the MIB organization. But “Men In Black” producer Walter Parkes told Parade magazine last fall that both stars were amenable to a third movie. But Sony would not comment on their returns when asked by EW yesterday. The development of the story is said to be in even more of a “nascent” stage than the “Ghostbusters 3,” script which is also under the aegis of Sony, but hasn’t even been written yet.

Either way, best of luck with that. We would say, hopefully director Barry Sonnenfeld isn’t on board, but frankly, he and this mindless blockbuster material deserve each other.

*We originally wrote that Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky of “The Office,” were tapped as the writers here, but this is incorrect. We got our wires crossed. Too little sleep and too little coffee. We apologize for the error.
