New year, new movies, new news. Over at THR we hear of a new project for Olivia Thirlby, who this website wishes got
more work,
so hurrah. The project is called “The White Orchid,” and will be a California
noir starring Thirlby as a social worker who gets involved in the investigation
of a murder: that of the titular blonde. It’ll also star Nichelle Nichols, the
original Uhura, and will be directed by Steve Anderson.
A little while ago
we reported on news of an Allman Brothers biopic, “Midnight Rider,” set to be directed by Randall Miller (“CBGB“) and starring Tyson Ritter (of All-American Rejects)
as Gregg Allman. That project continues apace, with news from THR that William
Hurt has been cast as the older Gregg, looking back on his rise to stardom and
doing his best to get clean in his old age.
Keith Stanfield had a good 2013, with his
first ever role as Marcus in “Short Term
him (and the rest of the cast) acclaim. The Wrap has the news that he’s
now leveraged that into a role in “The Purge
crime in a dystopian society. Frank Grillo and Michael K. Williams will also be
appearing, because if there’s one thing Michael K. Williams knows, it’s
committing crimes (on film).
And finally, over here in Britannia (via Hey U Guys), some
news coming out of a chat between two of the nominees for BAFTA’s Rising Star
Award, George MacKay and Will Poulter, who featured respectively in
director-actor Dexter Fletcher‘s two films “Wild Bill” and “Sunshine on Leith.” The two discussed the apparent possibility of appearing as brothers in another
Fletcher film, though it won’t be the somewhat troubled Freddie Mercury biopic
that finally settled on Ben Whishaw for its leading man. It is
one we know a little something about, however: “Provenance,” a long-planned
Western about Londoners shipping out to the Old West (Victorian Londoners,
presumably, unless it’s also a time travel movie). But first, he has to get
that Mercury movie made…
