It’s not every day that a trailer for a film novelization is released. But then again, when Quentin Tarantino writes the book, you better believe a trailer is going to be made, and that’s exactly what we get with the new clip to promote the novelization of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”

If you’ve seen the film version of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” you know what the book is going to bring you. As the trailer lays out, the book is a novelization of the film from Tarantino that follows the story of struggling actor, Rick Dalton, his best friend/stunt double, Cliff Booth, the young actress, Sharon Tate, and the cult leader/wannabe musician, Charles Manson. However, as we all know from the promotion of the film, Tarantino had a bunch of worldbuilding and story beats that didn’t make it into the final feature. It’s assumed there will be some of that unseen/previously unreleased story and plot added to the novelization.
One of the best parts of the trailer is the way everything feels so retro. Novelizations, as a whole, are retro enough, with new ones barely getting released nowadays. But as the clip does a great job of showing, there was a time when films like “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and other major films, no matter the genre, would have been adapted into a book and read by millions of fans. Perhaps, if popular enough, we could see more of these get released over the coming years.
You can preorder the novel now before it sees release on June 29.
Here’s the description of the novelization:
Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited first work of fiction — at once hilarious, delicious, and brutal — is the always surprising, sometimes shocking new novel based on his Academy Award-winning film.
RICK DALTON – Once he had his own TV series, but now Rick’s a washed-up villain-of-the week drowning his sorrows in whiskey sours. Will a phone call from Rome save his fate or seal it?
CLIFF BOOTH – Rick’s stunt double, and the most infamous man on any movie set because he’s the only one there who might have gotten away with murder. . . .
SHARON TATE – She left Texas to chase a movie-star dream, and found it. Sharon’s salad days are now spent on Cielo Drive, high in the Hollywood Hills.
CHARLES MANSON – The ex-con’s got a bunch of zonked-out hippies thinking he’s their spiritual leader, but he’d trade it all to be a rock ‘n’ roll star.
HOLLYWOOD 1969 – YOU SHOULDA BEEN THERE
