One of the trademark maneuvers that has made Netflix one of the go-to destinations for quality TV programming is the ability of the streaming service to throw money at canceled shows and give them a much-hyped return. The company most recently did this with “Designated Survivor” and “Lucifer.” However, with “One Day at a Time,” the tables were turned and Netflix became the bad guy.
After the sudden and controversial cancellation of the acclaimed sitcom “One Day at a Time,” which is lauded for its diverse cast and timely storylines, fans were outraged. But never fear, dear Latinx sitcom-loving viewers, this time another network saved a Netflix show from doom.

According to a report on Deadline, “One Day at a Time” has been saved from cancellation thanks to the Pop network. The deal says that Pop will order a 13-episode fourth season and has gained the rights to the first three seasons. In addition, the fourth season will air reruns after its Pop debut on CBS. Why CBS? Well, the major network is the original home of the classic “One Day at a Time” from 40 years ago.
“One Day at a Time” is the modern reimagining of the classic Norman Lear-created sitcom. The series follows a single Army veteran and the trials and tribulations of her Cuban-American family.
The irony of the deal wasn’t lost on Pop president Brad Schwartz, who joked, “We are disrupting the disruptors.”
He added, “I really loved the show; it made me laugh and made me cry, and I also felt it was such an important show that dealt with love and inclusion and acceptance and diversity, a single mother head of household and socio-economic issues. It was such a well constructed and beautiful show, and it had a lot of the same themes and a lot of the same emotion that ‘Schitt’s Creek’ has. It felt that show belonged on Pop and on a network that also had ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ so we started dreaming ‘what if.’”
“Three months ago, I was heartbroken with the news of our beloved ‘One Day At A Time’s’ cancellation. Today, I’m overwhelmed with joy to know the Alvarez family will live on,” said Lear.
The fourth season of “One Day at a Time” is expected to arrive in 2020.
