Next week, “X-Men: Apocalypse” will explode into multiplexes everywhere, but one thing 20th Century Fox has been somewhat mum about is that this might be the last time we see the core of the rebooted mutants — led by James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and Jennifer Lawrence — on the big screen together. Even director Bryan Singer admits there is something of a finality to the next chapter in the saga.

“It’s kind of a conclusion of six films — ‘X-Men’ 1, 2, 3, as well as ‘First Class’ and ‘Days of Future Past’ — and yet a potential rebirth of younger, newer characters,” he told EW, though he also stressed that it doesn’t mean it’s the end more X-Men films.
But in terms of Lawrence and co., whose contracts are now up, the actress is quite candid that getting them back might be tough. “Fassbender and McAvoy and I were all talking. Like, ‘Will you come back?’ ‘I dunno.’ ‘I’ll come back, if you come back.’ Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn’t come back, none of us are,” she explained.
But Fox likely isn’t too worried. With Singer already pitching the studio on a female Wolverine to follow Hugh Jackman’s final turn as the character next year, not to mention a brewing X-Force movie, and more Deadpool to come, they have plenty of superhero options on the table. Not to mention the younger crew members (played by Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, and Alexandra Shipp) that step into the battle in ‘Apocalypse.’ Still, the studio likely wants to keep the line open to the A-listers if they choose to come back.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” opens on May 27th. Check out some new images and clips below.
