Set in a suburban fantasy world, where two teenage elf brothers embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there in the world, Disney and Pixar’s “Onward” might sound a little silly or strictly for kids. Yet, like a lot of Pixar material, it’s rooted in something emotional and real: a missing father.

“This is a really personal film for me,” director Dan Scanlon recently told audiences at the CCXP expo in Brazil. “When I was a year old, my father passed away — and my brother was three. We have no memory of him.”

Written by C. S. Anderson and Scanlon, the film is very personal and rooted in Scanlon’s personal tragedy. In “Onward,” the elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) have one day to be with their deceased father, who died when they were too young to remember him. Using an old magic staff, they can bring half of him back, but now they must find a way to finish the job within 24 hours.

So, it’s a father’s and son’s movie with a ticking clock element to it filtered through Pixar’s sensibilities of humor, entertainment that often come delivered with sensitivity and a big heart.
“Onward” also features the voice of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Ian and Barley’s mom, Laurel Lightfoot, and Octavia Spencer as the voice of the Manticore. Just announced as joining the voice cast are Ali Wong, Lena Waithe, and Mel Rodriguez. Scanlon’s producing partner on the film is Kori Rae—which makes this a brought-to-you-by-the-team-behind “Monsters University” project. Here’s the official synopsis:
