With "Killer Elite," "The Grey," "Lockout" and "End Of Watch" among the titles of the nascent distributors Open Road, it's safe to say they specialize in a particular niche. Low to modest budget genre fare with a touch of star or brand power (ie. "Silent Hill"). And now they've picked up a project that has both.
The distributor has landed the U.S. rights to Robert Rodriguez's upcoming "Machete Kills." It's a good deal for all, with the film marking arguably Open Road's biggest (or starriest certainly) project to date, while Rodriguez is ensured it will get a wide release and a solid campaign. As you know, Danny Trejo returns to stop a mad billionaire from launching a missile into space, and as the formula goes, he'll be surrounded with ton of stars in supporting roles or cameos including: Mel Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Demián Bichir, Amber Heard, Vanessa Hudgens, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Lady Gaga, William Sadler, the Avellan Twins and Marko Zaror.
No exact release date, but keep your eyes peeled for 2013 and remember who's boss. [Deadline]
