With films such as “1917” and “Bombshell” still to be screened, there are only two likely locks for Original Screenplay nominations this year: Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.” The remaining three slots will be fought over in a competitive campaign for the aforementioned unseen films as well as Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin-won’s “Parasite,” Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain and Glory,” the trio behind “Ford v. Ferrari” and Scott Z. Burns’ “The Report.” And that doesn’t take into account potential love for Rian Johnson’s “Lives Out,” the ladies quartet that fueled “Booksmart” and even Robert and Max Eggers’ “The Lighthouse.” This won’t be an easy nomination for anyone to land and is an interesting play for the usually forward-thinking Writer’s Branch.
