What’s next on Taika Waititi’s list of Hollywood conquests? Besides the imminent release of “Thor: Love And Thunder” this July, it’s plundering the high seas with fellow New Zealander Rhys Darby.

The pair teams up as the short-lived real-life pirate duo of Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard in “Our Flag Means Death” on HBO Max this March. In the show, Darby plays Bonnet; an English aristocrat lured to piracy who comes under the tutelage of Waititi’s Blackbeard in Nassau, an infamous pirate’s den in the early 1700’s Caribbean. Will Bonnet’s straitlaced background get in the way of his ambition to swashbuckle? It’s very likely.
“Our Flag Means Death” boasts a sizeable comedic ensemble: Kristian Naim, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Rory Kinnear, Con O’Neill, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, and David Fane. Recurring actors include the likes of Fred Armisen, Leslie Jones, Nat Faxon, and Sama Schutte.
While Waititi directs the show’s pilot and serves as co-executive producer, David Jenkins is the creator/showrunner for “Our Flag Means Death.” It’s Jenkins’ first show since the TBS series “People Of Earth.”
Waititi’s involvement already helped catapult FX On Hulu’s “Reservation Dogs” into the TV spotlight last year. Will he do the same for “Our Flag Means Death?” HBO Max looks to have another winner on its hands. On March 3, audiences find out when the show airs exclusively on the streaming channel.
