Netflix has released, via Vanity Fair, the first full trailer for the Jane Fonda and Robert Redford reunion “Our Souls at Night“. The film, directed by Ritesh Batra, is set to be released at the end of this month and premiered a couple of weeks back at the Venice Film Festival The film is based on the final novel by Kent Haruf and written by “The Spectacular Now” scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (who have really crafted an interesting career out of novel adaptations). The film synopsis reads:
“Based on the best-selling novel written by Kent Haruf and adapted for the screen by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (The Fault in Our Stars), Our Souls at Night is set in Colorado and begins when Addie Moore (Jane Fonda) pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters (Robert Redford). Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they’d been neighbors for decades, but had little contact. Their children live far away and they are all alone in their big houses. She seeks to establish a connection, and make the most of the rest of the time they have.”
The film marks the first time that Redford and Fonda have worked together since Sydney Pollack’s 1979 film “The Electric Horseman”. Previously, the also co-starred in 1966’s “The Chase” and 1967’s “Barefoot in the Park” (if you want to be a completist, also check out 1960’s “Tall Story” featuring Fonda and an uncredited Redford in his first film role).
“Our Souls at Night” will be the second film that Batra releases this year, as his film “The Sense of an Ending” came out in March to decent reviews. He, also, directed the very good Irrfan Khan 2013 film “The Lunchbox”. “Our Souls at Night” will be released on Netflix on September 29th.
