'Out Of Blue' Exclusive Music: Listen To A Track From 'Black Swan' Composer Clint Mansell's Beautiful Score

Filmmaker Carol Morley’s upcoming film “Out of Blue” isn’t your typical crime thriller. Sure, there’s a detective (this time, played by the always-incredible Patricia Clarkson) on the hunt for a killer, but this film has a lot more on its mind, as it delves into existential questions about the nature of our universe. And because of that, “Out of Blue” needed a score from a composer that is capable of capturing that uniqueness with music. Enter Clint Mansell.

In honor of the film’s upcoming release in theaters and VOD next week, we are proud to premiere an exclusive track from Mansell’s score for “Out of Blue” that not only encapsulates the aforementioned unique story of the film, but also is just a damn good piece of music. For those not aware of Mansell, he’s the composer behind scores for Darren Aronofsky’s films, beginning all the way back with “Pi.” He’s also the man behind the music for “Moon,” “Stoker,” and the “San Junipero” episode of “Black Mirror.” Needless to say, The Playlist readers are probably fans of his music, even if they don’t know him by name.

Mansell recently said to us, “Carol has created a space where parallel worlds, the multiverse, quantum physics, black holes and a murder mystery set in New Orleans are the background for my score while ambiguity, mystery, melancholy, grief, and loss are at its heart.”

Lakeshore Records, in conjunction with Invada Records, will release the soundtrack digitally on March 15. You can pre-order here. And while you’re at it, make sure you see “Out of Blue” when it opens in select theaters and VOD on March 22.

Here’s the synopsis:

Detective Mike Hoolihan (Clarkson) is called in to investigate the murder of a young professor who, the night before her death, gave a lecture on the mysteries of the universe. When the cool-headed Hoolihan digs into the case, she must contend with the victim’s dubious ex-boyfriend and a family with its own murky past. The more the detective begins to pull apart the various strands of the case, the more her own vulnerabilities and imperfections are revealed. As our mesmerizing protagonist gets closer to the truth behind the murder, she also begins to discover a larger truth — but she worries that the fully realized answer may elude her.
