Based on the ongoing novel series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon, “Outlander” follows a British nurse in World War II who suddenly travels back in time to 1743, falls in love with a Scottish Highlander, and gets swept up in the torrent of history. Last season brought its share of tragedies, but as fans of the shows likely already know, the upcoming season follows the events of “A Breath Of Snow And Ashes” from the book series. So, no spoilers, but expect a startling revelation in the first episode and a whole new type of adversaries in the Christie family.

“Outlander” stars Caitriona Balfe, (recently taken off thanks to her awards-worthy performance in “Belfast“) Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, and John Bell. The show also stars Lauren Lyle, César Domboy, and Colin McFarlane. Newcomers this season include Mark Lewis Jones, Alexander Vlahos, Jessica Reynolds, Simon R. Baker, and Glen Gould.

The upcoming season lasts only eight episodes but will have longer runtimes, including a ninety-minute season premiere. Production for the next season, with sixteen episodes, begins later this year.
