Welcome to another edition of Over/Under Movies, the podcast in which we choose one overrated film and one underrated film — similar in tone, genre, style, or however we may see fit — and we discuss them.
READ MORE: The Worst Films Of 2017
On this episode – the first half of our year-end extravaganza – I’m joined by Oktay Ege Kozak and Erik McClanahan to discuss more than just simply one overrated and one underrated pick. In this half, we dive into what we viewed as the most overrated films of 2017, or more appropriately, the films that people liked that we just “didn’t get.”
Of course, The Playlist itself has run their own “The Most Underrated & Overrated Films Of 2017” feature with individual, highly subjective takes, but this is where we drill down a little further ourselves.
As usual, we do our absolute best to not sound like we are dishing out “hot takes” left and right, especially since these films are no more than 11 months old, and time usually plays a big factor in our choices when it comes to our regular programming. It’s also very subjective, obviously. 2017 was a great year for film, and with so many great films out there, it was bound to happen that, in the 13 films that we discuss on this episode – from indie darlings to mammoth blockbusters – there would be films released this year that we just don’t quite see eye-to-eye on. Interestingly enough, where the three of us usually find our tastes to be in-sync, there is plenty of divide among some of the picks chosen in this episode, which we get into.
