I’m sure that everyone reading this is familiar with the late- ‘90s classic, “Spice World,” right? You know, the big screen debut from the superstar pop group The Spice Girls? The movie which featured actors such as Richard E. Grant, Alan Cumming, Dominic West, Roger Moore, Stephen Fry, and Hugh Laurie? Okay, so you probably aren’t the biggest fan of the film. But it’s 2019 and what’s old is new again, and Paramount is taking that to heart with the studio’s new animated film starring none other than the ‘90s female pop group.
According to THR, Paramount Animation unveiled the studio’s upcoming slate of animated projects. And topping the list is an animated musical film featuring the original five Spice Girls in a new adventure. Borrowing a healthy bit from “Bohemian Rhapsody” and pop culture’s obsession with ‘90s nostalgia, The Spice Girls film will feature plenty of iconic songs from the group, as well as new songs.
Of course, you can’t have a Spice Girls film, animated or not, without the members of the group themselves. And make no mistake, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, and Victoria Beckham are all signed on and ready to lend their voices to the film. I really want to say this is a terrible idea, as the group’s music is irritating and the live-action film is a train wreck. But honestly, after “Bohemian Rhapsody,” I’m fairly certain that story, acting, and overall filmmaking doesn’t matter in this sort of project, as long as the audience knows the tunes. And let’s be real, everyone knows the songs of The Spice Girls.
Paramount Animation president Mireille Soria said that genesis of the film started with the Girls, who “had an idea that we’ve been developing. They are very involved.”
No word on when the film might see the light of day, but Paramount Animation is planning on releasing two films per year starting in 2020, so it’s likely that they’re going to get this Spice Girls film out there quicker than you might think.
