Not many movies left in the Oscar race are still unseen, but Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" is among the dwindling handful. And the movie continues to be enigmatic and below the radar, with this one sheet offering a variety of new glimpses of the movie, all in the lettering of the title. As you already know, this film is the tale of the hunt and capture of Osama Bin Laden, with Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Mark Strong, James Gandolfini, Chris Pratt, Mark Duplass and more all featuring. But if you want an idea of how intense the operation was, this Vanity Fair article on the months and weeks leading up the attack — and then operation itself (and how it went off course) — is a must read. The film opens in limited release on December 19th.
Next, Brad Pitt sneers his way through Andrew Dominik's sizzling "Killing Them Softly," a crime caper/screed on capitalism and its soulless effect on America. Yeah, that's right. The actor plays a hitman who prefers to stay removed from his targets, and winds contracting out his next job, which is finding and killing two lowlives who knocked over a protected, high stakes poker game. What comes next is a movie both bristling, funny and timely. And as this latest one sheet suggest, bullets and money are the currency. The flim opens November 30th.
Lastly, comes an absolutely gorgeous poster for the indie flick "Simon Killer." Antonio Campos' sophomore effort follows recent graduate Simon (Brady Corbet) as he travels to Paris to escape the fallout from a former relationship. No matter how hard he tries, Simon can't seem to shake the past and feelings of lost love. Instead, he fills his days traveling the streets and taking in the sites, while composing letters to his ex-girlfriend, engaging in chat room sex and hitting on girls in the streets. When he meets a beautiful prostitute (Mati Diop) and falls in love, everything begins to unravel and we discover that Simon is harboring some dark secrets. Premiering at Sundance this year to strong buzz, we called it "like Roman Polanski’s take on 'The King of Marvin Gardens' " which is all you need to know. It will hit theaters next spring.
