Summer is winding down, but on its way to cinemas is a Sundance Film Festival gem in Geremy Jasper‘s “Patti Cake$,” a wildly fresh take on the coming of age narrative. Mixing humor, heart and music in a terrifically unique package that won over critics and audiences in Park City, this is a charmer well worth keeping an eye out for.
Jasper, who wrote 19 original songs for the film, emerges as a talent to watch with his film which tells the story of an aspiring hip-hop, looking for a future beyond her broken down hometown. Here’s the official synopsis:
In a coming-of-age story straight out of Jersey, an unlikely rapper finds her voice as a one-of-a-kind hip-hop legend in the making in Patti Cake$, the first feature film from acclaimed commercial and music-video director Geremy Jasper. Set in gritty strip-mall suburbia, Patti Cake$ chronicles an underdog’s quest for fame and glory with humor, raw energy, and some unforgettable beats.
Danielle Macdonald plays the titular character “Patti Cake$” and became an instant sensation at Sundance, bringing a well-earned heart to the film, with our critic saying, “It’s hard to equate what a star-making turn this is for Macdonald. The audience at the film’s world premiere gave an audible gasp when she answered her first question because no had a clue she was Australian let alone not American. In a movie like this, filmmakers often have to convince the audience an actor playing a musician, singer or, in this case, rapper are as good as the story says there are. At no point in “Patti Cake$” is there ever a hint that Macdonald is unable to legitimately rap. She’s simply a revelation.”
The film also stars a mix of up and comers and underrated talents such as McCaul Lombardi, Cathy Moriarty, Bridget Everett, and Siddharth Dhananjay. The film will be released August 18th through Fox Searchlight Pictures. Check out some new, exclusive photos from the film below.
