Patty Jenkins Talks Amazon Olympics In 'Wonder Woman 1984' & Possible Animated Spin-Off Series

Although the character origins of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman were already introduced in Patty Jenkins’s 2017 film, there seems to be even more world-building backstory yet to be uncovered. In a recent conversation with Empire, for their “Big-Screen Issue,” writer-director Patty Jenkins teases a flashback sequence in the upcoming “Wonder Woman 1984,” as well as alludes to the possibility for a spin-off series and/or a sequel for the franchise.

In the new image from “Wonder Woman 1984,” we see a young Diana preparing to throw a spear of some Amazonian variety. This flashback sequence, as cited by Jenkins in her interview, showcases the “Amazon Olympics.”

“What I love about the Amazon Olympics is everything that we got to really celebrate in the first movie… ,” she said. “Here are these people who are incredibly powerful and capable, but different in how they approach things. If you’ve been training for hundreds of years because of an impending invasion, you’re going to be constantly working on all these skill sets. So, to me, every year, they would have these Olympics to see who’s doing the best on horses or swimming the fastest, and seeing new tricks people have figured out.”

But, Jenkins’s interest in mythical Amazonian culture and storytelling doesn’t stop there. Jenkins mentioned that “an animated series focused on the Amazons is being considered.” She also mentions the possibility of an Amazon spin-off film which would play a “part of the in-world story of ‘Wonder Woman.’”

After the recent news that Warner Bros. is paying an additional $20-$30 million to rework “Justice League” for HBO Max, it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch for them to continue fleshing-out and expanding the in-universe history of the Amazons.

Jenkins explained that through her collaboration with Gal Gadot on the first two films, they’ve both developed “ideas” for future stories. “You’re enjoying the movie you’re making and also reflecting on what could be different or better in the [real] world,” the filmmaker said. “And therefore what story you want to tell… That’s the greatest thing to me about superhero stories. You’re able to have a dialogue about what a hero would be right now. So yes, I have ideas for what I’d like to say, and Gal does too.”

“Wonder Woman 1984” is currently slated to hit theaters on October 2.
