Awards season doesn’t just mean jockeying for the Oscars. Cinema culture around the world is getting ready to honor the year’s finest, and today the European Film Awards revealed the list of nominees for 2014, which is basically a primer on the foreign movies you need to catch up on.
Leading the pack with five nominations is Pawel Pawlikowski‘s "Ida." It’s another feather in the cap for what has been an incredible run for the film, which has already picked up awards at festivals around the world and been selected as Poland’s Oscar entry this year. Close behind with four nominations is the no-less-acclaimed "Leviathan," from Russian filmmaker Andrei Zvyagintsev, which already has an award from Cannes on the shelf.
Tied with three nominations each are Lars von Trier‘s "Nymphomaniac Director’s Cut Volume I & II," Nuri Bilge Ceylan‘s Palme d’Or winner "Winter Sleep," and, somewhat surprisingly, Steven Knight‘s "Locke." Other films in the mix include the buzzy "Force Majeure," and the Dardennes’ "Two Days, One Night."
The awards will be handed out on December 13th. Check the list of nominees below, plus the winners of the technical prizes which have already been given. (And hell yes, Mica Levi won Best Composer for "Under The Skin.") [Cineuropa]
