Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Phantom Thread' Mixtape

Jennifer Lawrence may not dig “Phantom Thread,” but many have gotten on board the film’s oddball wavelength, and vibed with Paul Thomas Anderson‘s twisted tale of romance. As per usual, the filmmaker has concocted a movie that is not only strikingly original and a visual treat, but also a pleasure for the ears as well. Jonny Greenwood‘s Oscar nominated score is absolutely gorgeous, as are the jazz tunes from the era peppered throughout. But to get audiences in the mood, Anderson has something else up his sleeve.

70mm screenings of the film are coming to Toronto’s TIFF Bell Lightbox, and before the lights go down, the director has provided the cinema with a playlist of tunes that should be heard before the movie begins. There are some jams from the era — Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald & The Ink Spots, Helen Forrest — but also cuts by Neil Young, Big Star, and Beyoncé. Cinephiles will dig hearing Bernard Hermann‘s “Suspicions” from “Marnie,” while I’m mostly wondering how PTA could make a playlist without a track his most favorite pals, Haim. C’mon, Paul!

“Phantom Thread” is now playing. Check out the playlist below and if you’re not in Toronto, perhaps make your own Spotify playlist before you hit the cinema.
