We've Fallen Hard For 'Phantom Thread' [Adjust Your Tracking Podcast]

There’s nothing quite like falling in love…

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I fall head over heels for the new PTA joint, “Phantom Thread.” We may as well be Cher from “Clueless,” that is, we’re majorly, totally, crazy in love with this movie! Before we get to that on the podcast, though, it’s time to finally wrap up 2017 in film as we look back, bleary-eyed with nostalgia, at our most recent cinematic romances of the past year.

In doing so, we can’t help but gush hyperbolically as we open the first half of the show with a rundown of our favorite films of the past 12 months. Is it just us, or was 2017 a great year for all kinds of movies? Who knows, we may still be smitten. Still heady and possessed by the romance of cinematic pleasures both accessible, challenging and everything in between. In these uncertain times, cinema has done for us what it always does so well: provided a warm blanket of comfort, a safe place to explore, learn, challenge assumptions, empathize, and of course, entertain and move us.

And so, I wanted to post our respective top 10 lists for favorite films of 2017 here. We talked about all these films on the podcast last year (some of which we disagreed on), so make sure to go back into the AYT archives if you want to hear more thoughts about any choices from our lists. Also, if you care to see my top 30 favorite films of 2017, you can check out my list on Letterboxd (and follow me there if you’re so inclined!). Without further ado, AYT’s year in cinema…

On the back half of the show we do get to Paul Thomas Anderson‘s latest masterwork, “Phantom Thread” (read our A+ grade review), a film so bewitching, romantic, sensual and, yep, funny as hell that it almost made my heart explode. It’s a beautiful piece of work, perhaps one of PTA’s very best to date, and a total joy to get lost in.
