One of the many, many projects Phil Lord and Chris Miller are working on is "The Flash," with Warner Bros. tasking the pair with developing the story for this superhero picture. With the movie not due in cinemas until 2018, the duo still have some time to figure out what their incarnation will be. Yet they seem to have figured out a path, and they recently shared what their version of "The Flash" will entail.
"We’re trying to break a story," Lord told Hippojuice. "It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright. … I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen. … It’s going to be it’s own [thing, apart from the TV show]… it really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff."
So does that mean Ezra Miller, slated to play the lead role, won’t feature too prominently in the upcoming DC Comics movies "Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice" and "Suicide Squad"? It seems that way —I’d guess that maybe he won’t be introduced until 2017’s "Justice League Part 1." If you’re going to hire guys like Lord and Miller, it’s only to your benefit to give them as much room to play, rather than constrict them with story rules.
Meanwhile, the duo are also producing an animated Spider-Man movie for Sony, and Lord reveals that these kinds of high concept projects are appealing because there’s little in the way of expectations. "Chris and I like to carve out spaces where people will let us do what we want," Lord said. "So much of our careers are like ‘oh, no one will bother us while we try to make a "21 Jump Street" movie, because it’s such a crazy idea, no one’s going to know what to do with it.’ So we’re doing these things kind of like that. They’re part of these huge franchises, but kind of are off a little bit to the side, and that gives us a lot of creative freedom, and that’s the thing we love. Hopefully we won’t waste that!"
