Last fall, if you weren’t listening to "Serial," then you were listening to everybody else telling you to start tuning in. The podcast created by Sarah Koenig (who also hosts) and Julie Snyder captivated audiences in its augural season, diving into the mystery surrounding the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, whose ex-boyfriend was convicted of the crime. It was a helluva story that caused fierce debate online about all aspects of the case, and now it’s going to television.

The permanently busy duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller are creating a TV series based on "Serial," but with a bit of a meta twist. Instead of recreating the Hae Min Lee case, Lord and Miller’s idea for their show is to to detail the making of the podcast. It’s a smart move, one that will presumably follow Koenig and Snyder’s own sense of discovery as they researched the details of their first season. Right now, the show doesn’t have a home but once Lord and Miller get their team together, they’ll hit cable companies to see who will bite, and I can only imagine this will be a hot prospect.
Meanwhile, Koenig and Snyder aren’t shying away from controversial material for their next round of "Serial" — the second season will focus on Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier who disappeared from his military based in Afghanistan and was captured by the Taliban. Screenwriter Mark Boal is co-producing the new batch of episodes, and it probably doesn’t hurt that he’s already been working on a feature film version of this story with Kathryn Bigelow. [THR]
