With Sundance Film Festival officially in the rearview, the awards handed out and the studios finishing up their buys, now the films, the filmmakers and the studios that bought up movies are looking to plan the launches into the real world. One of the very first from Sundance is “Photograph” which premiered at the film festival in Utah and was then quickly acquired for U.S. release by Amazon Studios.

Premiering in the aptly-titled Premieres section out of competition, “Photograph” is directed by Ritesh Batra, who gained momentum with his 2017 films “The Sense of an Ending” and the Netflix release “Our Souls at Night.” The latter of the two films stars Sundance champion Robert Redford who shared opening remarks at the film festival and often makes appearances. He also directed “The Lunchbox” starring Irrfan Khan that was released to much acclaim in 2013, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival that year.

“Photograph” captures the intersecting lives of two people in Mumbai. A struggling street photographer is continuously pressured by his grandmother to get married. Meeting a stranger, he asks the young woman to pose as his fiancée only for their lives to be changed in what was just an insignificant fib. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra, Batra captures the beauty of Mumbai and the kind nature of the human spirit.
