The Bellas are going global in the first official trailer for “Pitch Perfect 3,” directed by Trish Sie. While “Pitch Perfect” was rather delightful in the “don’t think too hard about the logistics” type of way, “Pitch Perfect 2” brought any issues from the first and more into the spotlight with ridiculous narrative pivots, casual racism, sexism and homophobia, and suffering from “too much” syndrome where they made everything bigger and louder than the first. It was always a little bit of a hard sell that a capella groups in college would be the biggest thing to ever hit a college campus, harder still is that it has such a momentum that it would take them global.
For the third installment in the series, it looks like there’s another twist coming. Let’s hope that writers Kay Cannon and Sie can recapture the dark (but not insensitive) humor of the first movie and forget the noise of the second. Here’s the official synopsis:
After the highs of winning the World Championships, the Bellas find themselves split apart and discovering there aren’t job prospects for making music with your mouth. But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas USO tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time.
Starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Hana Mae Lee, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Chrissie Fit, Kelley Jakle, Shelley Regner, Ruby Rose, John Lithgow, John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks, “Pitch Perfect 3” opens on December 22nd.
