We discuss two of our favorite shows (and entries on our top TV of 2016 list), “Jane The Virgin” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” These series share more than just a network home on The CW, our affection and a need for better titles.

Both series are led by women on and off screen: Jennie Snyder Urman is the showrunner for “Jane the Virgin,” and Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna created “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” These are two shows that don’t take the standard approach to 60 minutes on broadcast television, playing with format and structure while literally teaching the audience about the Bechdel test.
