Wim Wenders Gets Unprecedented Access In The Documentary 'Pope Francis – A Man of His Word'

Pope Francis has, since the beginning, tried to be a different type of Pope. For decades, the Pope has always been a private, almost secretive person, who has made public appearances but with very little personal interaction. Pope Francis has flipped that idea on its head. By all public accounts, Pope Francis has been open, honest, and frankly, charming. In the new trailer for the upcoming documentary “Pope Francis – A Man of His Word,” we see more of the man that is the religious leader that hundreds of millions look up to.

The purpose of the footage shown is to give viewers the idea that Pope Francis is different. He even makes a mother-in-law joke! But the footage also shows that this Pope doesn’t drive around in limos or keep distance from his adoring crowds. He’s basically a rock star, and you can tell that he doesn’t mind getting up close and personal with people.

‘A Man of His Word’ is directed by Wim Wenders, a veteran director who was nominated for a Best Documentary Feature Oscar for the film “Pina.” While this film doesn’t appear to uncover any unknown truths or tackle the heavy issues, ‘A Man of His Word’ looks to be aimed primarily at a religious audience that already knows, and probably loves, Pope Francis.

“Pope Francis – A Man of His Word” is scheduled for release in the U.S. on May 18.

Here’s the full synopsis:

“Pope Francis – A Man of His Word,” is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, rather than a biographical documentary about him. The pope’s ideas and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today’s global questions. From his deep concern for the poor and wealth inequality, to his involvement in environmental issues and social justice, Pope Francis engages the audience face-to-face and calls for peace.
