Posters: Sprawl On The Grass For Richard Linklater’s ‘Boyhood’; Michael Fassbender's Head Gets Gigantic For ‘Frank’

Boyhood, Frank

We’d heard back around Sundance that the title for Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” would likely change. Guess that’s not happening. “Boyhood” now has a poster and it’s, well…. not very different from the three scant photos we’ve seen. In fact, it’s the exact photo of the boy in question (Ellar Coltrane), just in poster size. Still, Linklater’s movie is worth celebrating. Shot over the course of 12 years with the same four actors Ethan Hawke, Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette and the filmmaker’s daughter, Lorelei Linklater, “Boyhood” is a terrific cinematic experience chronicling the life of a family over more than a decade. It’s a journey that’s both emotional and even transcendent as the family’s center, Mason (Coltrane), goes from childhood to adulthood over the course of almost three hours (our review here).

“I bet the whole farm on that property of storytelling, that you would become invested and this would be a building up of time unfolding,” Linklater said in our interview from Berlin earlier this year, and this gamble pays off. IFC Films will open “Boyhood” in select theaters on July 11th.

A poster for another Sundance film we loved has arrived. It’s the U.K. quad poster for “Frank,” Lenny Abrahamson’s hilarious outsider-rock misfits comedy starring Michael Fassbender as a Syd Barret-esque rocker who fronts an curmudgeonly atonal psyche-rock band. Also featuring excellent turns by Maggie Gyllenhaal, Domhnall Gleeson, Scoot McNairy and more, we called the movie riotously funny out of Sundance and our review said the picture was “off-the-wall and a terrific paean to the misfits and freaks of the world, their dreams, visions and togetherness.”

A fictional tale based off a true-story and freak-rock band in the U.K. featuring a character named Frank Sidebottom (Chris Sievey), during our interview with Abrahamson out of SXSW, the filmmaker said, “at its playful heart [the story] is true to the maverick spirit of Chris, the creator of Frank Sidebottom, but it’s not about Chris or Frank.” There’s no U.S. release date for it yet, but Magnolia will put the movie out later this year. It’s out in the U.K. on May 9th.

Look for both films to likely hit in any “best of the year so far” preview pieces we do later this year. [Buzzfeed/Empire]
