Those still praying for a followup to the 2008 Judd Apatow stoner comedy “Pineapple Express” may have some solid hope thanks to a tidbit from an MTV interview with lead actor James Franco.
Franco, who will also star in ‘Express’ director David Gordon Green’s medieval comedy “Your Highness,” said he spoke with the director recently and remarked that the idea of a sequel — which has been discussed and tossed around ever since it’s 2008 release — is definitely “in the air” and “practical steps are being taken” to make it happen. Does this mean that Green would reprise his role as a director as well? It’s anyone’s guess at this point, seeing as the status of the sequel’s existence is only vague at best from Franco’s words and a brief mention from Apatow last fall.
Either way, unless the long-rumored “Anchorman” sequel arises at some point, this would mark the first time an Apatow feature would get a direct sequel treatment (the upcoming “Get Him To The Greek” features Russell Brand reprising his role from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” as rocker Aldous Snow, but isn’t quite a sequel per se). As we mentioned last fall as well, the only reason we can think of that this particular film would get a followup would be to make up for any supposed lack of quality in the original. You can watch the short bit with Franco below.
