The idea of a Quentin Tarantino “Star Trek” film is almost too amazing to be real. Film fans, even those who hate sci-fi or ‘Trek,’ have to be salivating over the idea of seeing Tarantino’s take on sci-fi/fantasy. So, when it was reported that the famous director was working with J.J. Abrams on a story for a potential ‘Trek’ film, fans lost their minds. But if you listen to one of the actors from that franchise, it sounds like we just need to all calm down, for now, about a Tarantino “Star Trek.”
Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the new “Star Trek” films, was talking to ET Canada and had this to say about the state of ‘Trek:’
“First of all, I think there’s a couple of scripts. Because there was a script being written before Quentin Tarantino came up with his idea for a potential film. And so I think they are kind of developing more than one. So I don’t know what is going to happen. Quentin is off doing another movie. So, I feel like we are in a state of anticipation. All of us are really excited about the idea of working with Quentin on a Trek film, but I know Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, who wrote the last film, are writing a script and there are another set of writers writing a script. So, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

There’s a lot there to break down, but the main crux of what he says is clear – don’t count on a Tarantino “Stark Trek” just yet. According to the actor, there are currently at least three scripts being worked on. One from Tarantino, which sounds like the one that’s furthest from completion, another by “Star Trek Beyond” writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, and a third, which is probably the one by
JD Payne and Patrick McKay. The Payne and McKay script is reported to be the one that features Captain Kirk meeting his dead father, who was played by Chris Hemsworth in 2009’s “Star Trek.”
Of course, everyone wants to see what Tarantino has cooked up for the franchise, but the truth is that a fourth ‘Trek’ film isn’t a guarantee at this point. With ‘Beyond’s’ subpar box office, Paramount would need to know they have something special on their hands to invest in a new film in the franchise. So, even if they’re working on three separate scripts, including one with Tarantino, we might not get any of them. Plus, as Quinto says, Tarantino is off making “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” so he’s a bit too busy to help for the foreseeable future.
Perhaps, Quinto is doing his best Spock by trying to be logical and not get fans’ hopes up just yet.
